A committed community activist, Julie's current service includes:
Board Member and Past President, Middle Way House (since 2000)
Board Member, Planned Parenthood of Indiana (since 2007)
Member of the Steering Committee, Monroe County Democratic Women's Caucus (since 2004)
Victim's Advocate, Middle Way House (since 1995)
Member, Monroe County Board of Zoning Appeals (since 2007)
Volunteer, Steering Committee, Indiana Equality (since 2003)
Julie is currently the owner of Cartridge World, a locally owned and operated green business. From 1997-2007, Julie worked as an Instructor in the Gender Studies Department at Indiana University-Bloomington.
In 2005, Julie earned her Ph.D. in History and Gender Studies from Indiana University Bloomington. She perviously earned four additional degrees: A Masters in Russian History (IU), A Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in History (Eastern Michigan University) and a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications and Film (Eastern Michigan University).
In addition to her current community service efforts, Julie previously participated in:
- Faculty Advisor, Indiana University Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (2004-2006)
- Mediator, Community Justice and Mediation (2005-2006)
- Indiana University Commission on Personal Safety (1994-2001)
- Chair, Take Back the Night (an annual march to protest violence against women) and Coordinating Committee (1996, 2000, 2002)
Julie has traveled internationally, most recently to:
- St Petersburg Russia - independent research and teaching English as a second language (1995)
- Moscow - Dissertation research at the Central Medical Library and the Government Archives of the Russian Federation (2001)
- Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan - Faculty Exchange to the American Studies department at the American University - Kyrgyzstan (now the American University-Central Asia) to assist in the incorporation of gender studies into their existing curriculum (2000)
Julie has received a number of local awards, including:
- Emerging Leader - Community Activism (Bloomington's Women's History Month Award) - 2006
- Nominee, Spirit Award (Indiana University GLBTQ award) - 2004
- Vagina Warrior (Vagina Monologues award) - 2004
- Teaching Excellence Recognition Award, Gender Studies, Indiana University - 1999 and 2000
